Digger's defender started out the same J.T's did. Talking about how helpful Digger was. The defender also went into how Digger has had a bad relationship with his father, and has never had anyone to talk to. Then, Digger's mom spoke about how Digger ahd a good heart and when the boys were free, she would move in with her sister along with her kids so Digger will have a fresh start. Both J.T. and Digger spoke about how sorry they were, and Digger even cried. The judge knew that these boys needed to be punishe because what they did was awful and hurt so many. They were to be sent to a forestry camp in western Maryland for nine months, until they could prove they've learned something. before Brady knew it, his two best friendswere ebign placed in hand cuffs and taken away before their mothers or anyone could say goodbye. It was only when Brady had gotten a cup of water that he realized his hands were shaking.
The DiAngelos moved to Virginia together, and were scheduled to have a baby girl in December. Brady started high school, and recieved news that J.T. would write him. Life was getting better, and Dad was still crabbing. They would never forget what happened, but some how it brought them all closer together. Brady and his dad even started building a boat together, tha they would name Ms. Dee, after Brady's mom. They would sail it as far as it could go.

It was the day of the trial. As Brady sat on a wooden bench in the boling court room, he began to worry about J.T. and Digger. They both entered, both looking very nice, and Brady started to realize how crucial it was that everything went right, or else they may not be his friend anymore. Brady couldn't stand that thought, especially about J.T. To Brady's surprise there was no testimony needed, J.T. and Digger both pleaded guilty and admitted it right away. Mrs. DiAngelo's thoughts were read, and it was getting very emotional. J.T. was defended very well, and Brayd agreed withe verything said, but he wasn't sure how Digger would be accepted.
J.T. and Digger had their first trial two days later, which Brady did not have to attend but he wanted to. J.T. entered and shot Brady a look and a nod. The judge, or master, entered and everyone stood. The master had clarified that they were both being accused of second degree murder. Brady's parents seemed normal around him, but Brady overheard them talking about how upset they were. His parents were very forgiving and comfroting to Brady. Brady was upset that the cost of the lawyer was so much. so he decided to withdrawl the moeny he earned from Mrs. DiAngelo. Brady's cousin came to visit. Brady couldn't see his friends because they couldn't leave their houses. the had ankle trackers. Brady suddenyl thought back to when he was babysitting Ben and how they were watching the Lion King. Ben never thought scar was bad, but he knew he was being mean.
The truth was out and spreading fast. Dsd, Mom, and Carl were all aware of what happened. Mom did not realize how serious this was. Carl informed them not to do anything befire they protected Brady. It was going to be crazy and Brady knew it. Brady went to his attorney and told him the whole story. Luckily, Brady did not really have a reason to be in serious trouble. He gave the idea which could have been a conspiracy, and destroying the evidence did not matter becaus eof how long it had been. Brady was glad he was off the hook, but now he was worried about his friends because were certainly not. They could be in a juvenile facility until they were to turn twent one. It was bad, Brady just kept repeating the story. he told the police who would be confronting his friends. Brady was numb and overwhelmed. This is not going to be good.
The next morning Brady and his dads got up early. They headed to the dock and got Brady onto the boat. They had a plan and drifted onto the Corsica. As soon as Brady saw the rusty piling he immediately thought back to last April when everything ahppened with Ben. They arrived at the old dock but there was no sign of the kayak. Then Brady's dad realized it was a certain part of the water that must've caused the kayak to drop into a whole. They searched for a while and then found the kayak. They used all their might to bring it into the boat. When they pulled it out and got it settled, the rain washed away all of the slime and algae. This is when they both saw three holes drilled in the kayak. Brady's dad didn't say anything at first but he asked Brady what this was. Brady couldn't handle it, he told the truth, the whole story.
Everything was coming to a head. Brady hadn't seen Carl in a while so It was nice that he came by. Brady decided he would go out with Carl to get a movie and some sandwiches. When they got to the video store, J.T. happened to be there. Which was awkward because J.T. did not look good. His Father wasn't doing well and he looked miserable. Brady and Carl went back to his house to watch a movie and eat their sandwiches. When carl was driving Brady home, he brought up how Brady's dad would be going to the protest in Crisfield. He had told Brady that it was very dangerous. He arrived home with a big welcome from Tilly. Brady talked to his mother about the really meaning behind her butterfly garden. She told him it symbolized hope for children who have died. He is also surprised that his dad decided not to go to protest, because he knew it was the wrong choice for the situation. After a long conversation about telling the truth and making the right decision, Brady asks his dad to help him take the Miss Amanda out and haul the red kayak out of the water.
Tilly was excited to see Brady when he got back. Everything seems pretty normal at first. Apparently the crabbing season wasn't doing so well. His parents went out, and Brady sprang into action. He fed Tiny Tim, Brady took the drill to the the dock and got into is dinghy. Brady went out on the water with the drill in hand. He made the choice to throw the drill into the water, and figured no one would ever know. He thought what he did was protecting everyone, but was it really?
Brady figured the next morning he would be completely relieved. He took a week off, but then returned to working for Mrs. DiAngelo. He didn't want to talk to any and it was like he was paranoid. Brady told his Mom that he could no longer work Gina. This gave Brady the chance to talk with his Mom and it turns out they both had the same feelings about Amanda. They talked for a while, and Brady's mom told him to keep working for Gina for a while. 'I stared at the key, then looked up at my mother. I loved my mom so much, I thought. It would just kill her to know what J.T. and Digger had done, and how it was all my idea...' This passage really gives an example of how deep of a whole Brady is digging himself and his friends. His mom is starting to really connect with him and he just continues to lie. He has everyone he is close with in a hard situation especially if word gets out. It's Brady's last day of school, and Carl comes to pick him up in his ambulance. They talked a lot about the DiAngelo's, but Brady failed to mention the drill. At school, Digger approached Brady. He still had the same question about the drill. He told Brady he needs to do more than hide it or else they could be in even more trouble. Digger said that getting rid of it would make everyone forget about what happened. Brady was sure no one would ever forget. J.T. also makes an effort to reach out to Brady and even asks if they could be friends again. Brady wants to, but does can't hang out because he is going to Rhode Island. Of course, J.T. thinks Brady is doing what J.T. did to him earlier on.
Brady left for Rhode Island on a bus. He got a window seat and decided it would be best to just think the whole ride. He did have a lot to decide on. He also thinks back to a fun memory of him and his friends, and what they all wanted to be when they were older. Then, after all the happy memories, he thought back to when Carl informed him on what happened wehn you had hypothermia. It was awful and he prayed Ben didn't suffer that much. Brady arrived at Rhode Island. He was welcomed by his cousins and Aunt. When they got to the house. Emily, the cousin, wanted to play Barbie with Brady. Brady hated this stuff but decided to watch. It didn't take long for Brady to come upstairs and have his aunt offer him a sprite and to turn on the TV. There wasn't anything good on, so he decided to look through some photo albums. He came upon a picture of Amanda, which at first he didn't recoqnize. He actually teared up at the sight of his deceased sister. He had never seen a picture of her before. The rest of the trip was really fun, but now Brady had to return to all of the drama. He finally arrived in Baltimore and by then he had figured out what he was going to do. When Brady arrives at Digger's he is just outsiding playing basketball with his brother. Brady explains to Brady what he knows, but Brady denies it happened. Brady returns home and hides the drill. He then realizes he forgot to finsih at the DiAngelos, so he goes back only to hear rustling near the boathouse. It is Digger and he is looking for the drill. He brought up the fact that is Brady moved the drill then his fingerprints were on it. This was true, but didn't make brady feel any better. Digger basically gave the whole back story and why it was crucial to get rid of the drill. They could be in huge trouble because they all conrtibuted and the crime they committed was murder.
The next day was Memorial Day, but there was no way Brady was going. He faked a stomach ache which would buy him some time while his parents went to a barbeque. He ahd a lot of thinking to do. Mrs. DiAngelo returned a few days later. She looked even worse than when she left, but Brady didn't dare to ask waht had happeend with mr. DiAngelo. he showed her the job he had done on the boathouse, and then broke the news that he couldn't work for her for two weeks. the first week because of exams and the second becasue he was vacationing to Rhode Island (although he wasn't sure). This would buy him some more time, but he couldn't stay away forever. Brady's job had been going very well. On one hot saturday, Mrs. DiAngelo had asked Brady to clean out an old boathouse. Brady was really familiar with the boathouse, because him and his friends would play in it when Digger's grandfather owned the property. She also mentions to Brady that she will be traveling for a few days to see her husband. She also announced the news to Brady thar she was pregnant. As Brady started cleaning the boathouse he started to recognize things from when they used to play. After she leaves Brady discovers something pretty interesting. It's his father's cordless drill with red falkes of paint that look similar to the color of the DiAngelos red kayak that sunk. Then, Brady has another flashback to when they were hanging out on the beach by the DiAngelos when Digger was upset. Brady had "jokingly" come up with a plan to drill wholes in their kayak so that mr. DiAngelo will have to swim through the water if it starts to think. A dreadful feeling comes over him when he realizes that Digger might've had something to do with the red kayak and even Ben's death.
Brady doesn't knwo what to do. He is holding potential evidence of a murder. Brady goes home, leaving the boathouse a mess. He thinks up a plan. He will go to J.T's hosue and try to figure out what happened. When Brady arrives, he is informed that J.T.'s Dad was in the hospital that morning. He feels bad, but still needs to talk to J.T. J.T. tells Brady that Digger did drill the wholes and that he was in on it. He exclaims that he didn't mean fro them to get hurt, but Brady just pedals right on over to Digger's house. |
